Here they offer up what is arguably the first logical extension of the forgotten art of "Parlor Songs" in decades, recorded in a few short days in the South of France. These gems, which are clearly not relatable by adolescent ears, deal with the band members' impending mid-life crisis, and run the gamut from soft-shoe to hard drock. LABEL: Alien8 Recordings
Shalabi Effect: Unfortunately - (Alien8 Recordings)
Sam Shalabi / Alexandre St. Onge / Anthony Seck / Will Eizlini "Shalabi Effect is the most difficult band to characterize in the Montreal's vibrant music scene. Since their inception in the late 90's, the band, consisting of Sam Shalabi, Alexandre St. Onge, Anthony Seck and Will Eizlini, has managed to keep their sound fresh and exciting. They rarely play previously released material and they never repeat themselves live, giving each performance an unpredictable edge. This fourth and latest offering was recorded over three consecutive evenings during the band's recent residency at the Montreal Arts Interculturels institute in Montreal, Quebec. The band practiced throughout the day and recorded each evening's performance in front of a live audience. They then harvested a selection of the best material to create an album of unbelievable improv. The result is a record that truly represents the band's appetite for experimentation and their desire to keep things interesting for t
heir loyal following as well as for themselves."-Alien8-.95

The work follows Bethune through three cities over the course of 5 years in one of the most turbulent eras of 20th c

LABEL: Barry's Bootlegs
Cassetteboy: Dead Horse - (Barry's Bootlegs)
Cut and paste mayhem from the British duo of "Mike" and "Simon". They painstakingly assembled these 60 tracks from (at least) hundreds of sources. The works are extremely well timed and have a lot to say - certainly a lot of is consists of rude gags, but much is pointed satire and topical jabs at popular and political figures. "The government wants you to stay inside. The government is working to make sure you're unconcious. The government is a threat to life." Elsewhere Harry Potter fans may be alarmed at the extension of the story explaining his recent, er, growth spurts... It's relentlessly good fun - not a CD to play for your conservative friends, but a great set of assemblages that will no doubt make most laugh at the same time as they stop to think. Lowbrow art of the highest order.-.95

Now with his first solo disc, Frasca redefines the technique and brings the guitar into an entirely new universe. As he taps, picks, and pulls the strings, hitting blocks of wood against the guitar body Frasca never ceases to reinvent the instrument. Released in conjunction with Serious Music."-Cantaloupe-.95

LABEL: Defrag Sound Processing
Chartier, Richard: Re'Post'Postfabricated - (Defrag Sound Processing)
Richard Chartier / Coh / Vend / Asmus Tietchens / Frank Bretschneider / Goem / Taylor Deupree / Alva Noto / Freiband / Sogar / Byetone / Matmos / Steve Roden D.C.-based Richard Chartier is a minimal sound artist/composer and graphic designer who explores the relationship between sound, silence and the act of listening. Re'Post'Postfabricated is a reformed/remastered version of Postfabricated, which was Chartier's third full length CD, and was recorded between 1998 and 1999 via analog connections to Minidisc and afterwards mastered at a studio. The Minidisc compression, combined with a studio engineer not accustomed to this type of recorded material compromised the details of the sounds. In the words of Chartier himself, "Noting this difference upon listening to the source files, I began to reconstruct the entire work digitally, utilizing the original components. Originally all the tracks were recorded in real time with no overdubs following a score for each piece arranged in
advance. For this rerecording, having lost many of these notations, I diagrammed each arrangement and have replicated the pieces as closely as possible." Postfabricated was originally released in 1999 on Microwave/Staalplaat as a CD-R edition of 222. Re'Post'Postfabricated then, is a reconstruction of how Postfabricated was intended to sound. The artists on CD2 that were given sound source files to create new works (remixes/reworkings) out of the Postfabricated material include: Coh, Vend, Asmus Tietchens, Frank Bretschneider, Goem, Taylor Deupree, Alva Noto, Freiband, Sogar, Byetone, Matmos and Steve Roden.-.95

Hafler Trio, The: A Thirsty Fish - (God/Korm Plastics)
Andrew McKenzie Re-release of what is in many ways Hafler Trio's finest moments. Sonically enhanced with restored artwork, beautifully packaged including 2 CDs, a booklet, a poster and a postcard all in transparent overlay paper, cover photo by Genesis P-Oriridge. This is important audio work from Andrew McKenzie working solo: "Rather than using any field recording that he thought sounded interesting, McKenzie focused on recordings from sacred sites, weaving the recordings together with his electronics. It's a busy effect, with sounds coming from everywhere, sometimes lasting only a few seconds before disappearing into the mix. The intent was "to confuse people until they couldn't think anymore, so they'd have to feel. It was conjuring. The idea was - and still is to a certain extent - watch this hand while the other hand goes into the pockets. The stuff that everybody sees is not actually the whole point. Eskelin, Ellery / Parkins, Andrea / Black, Jim: The Secret Museum - (Hatology)
Ellery Eskelin-tenor saxophone / Andrea Parkins-accordion and sampler / Jim Black-percussion "The Secret Museum refers to both individuals and collective experiences that all of us carry around in our daily lives. We are each a secret museum of experiences and remembrances of events gone by, places that have since changed, people that are no longer with us. Music can be an excellent medium by which to express these lost times and places and bring us to new places as well. It's been very rewarding to present the strange and sometimes conflicting elements of my musical psyche to listeners around the world, opening the door to my own secret museum of the past, present and future"-Ellery Eskelin-.95

Liebman, David: The Distance Runner - (Hatology)
David Liebman-soprano & tenor saxophone, wooden flute "Here's Dave Liebman with his saxophones and a wooden flute in his very first concert of unaccompanied solos. It didn't happen until his fourth decade as a working jazz artist, even though he had recorded four solo albums down through the years. Once again we hear his brilliant sound and technique, and there are his devotion to spontaneity combined with his high instinct to shape improvisations. What Liebman offers most of all is a personal quality of adventure, the result of his endless musical curiosity. This music has so much vitality"-John Litweiler-.95

Mengis, Manuel Gruppe 6: Into The Barn - (Hatology)
Manuel Mengis-trumpet / Achim Escher-alto saxophone / Christoph Erb-tenor saxophone / Flo Stoffner-electric guitar / Marcel Stalder-electric bass / Linonel Friedli-drums "Born in the Swiss canton Wallis in 1972, trumpeter and part-time mountain guide Mengis probably is virtually unknown to most people. It thus comes as a surprise that his first release is for a label that has not pledged itself to promote and encourage local young talents but to track down adventurous and ambitious music of our time. Which, however, is another sign that the world of jazz has been undergoing fundamental changes for the past couple of years. Whoever still believes that New York is the hub of the jazz world is on the wrong track. Unfortunately many influential CD producers, festival organisers and music critics are still barking up this wrong tree (even in Europe), thus it will take some time for innovative impulses from regions which so far have been regarded as the periphery to be duly rec
ognised. Globalisation, which has often been demonised, could turn out to be a truly positive force in this respect."-Tom Gsteiger-.95

LABEL: Hometapes
Duncan, Paul: Be Careful What You Call Home - (Hometapes)
Paul Duncan-guitar, bass, piano, electronics, cello, drums, &c. "A mental score. A geographical response. The architecture of this record belongs almost anywhere, but it found itself at the source: "I began by wanting to hear and experience things that might take me out of a small town mentality þand I realized that small town experience is something that makes me exist," Paul said. Like "To An Ambient Hollywood," his 2003 debut, Be Careful What You Call Home is homemade with a range of musical ingredients. Self-taught, Paul utilizes guitar, bass, piano, electronics, cello, drums, etc. His move to New York reunited him with longtime friends/musicians and introduced him to new ones, enabling him to establish an ensemble for live performance and for accompaniment on recordings. This shared translation that has added a dimension to Paul's entire process þhe seems more confident to follow an idea be it avant or pop."-Home Tapes-.95

Lambert, Michael: Le Passant - (Jazz from Rant)
Michael Lambert / Dominic Duval / Ellery Eskelin / Malcolm Goldstein + Orchestra "Michel Lambert began working on the music on Le Passant (The Wanderer) in 1992. Time, however, brought about changes. He reduced his original symphonic work to its current instrumentation. He calls it a meeting of the two forces and a confrontation between music that is through-composed and freely improvised. The latter is seen in complete detail on the last seven pieces, which are improv-based. The first five (together comprising "Le Passant") have the improvisers and the orchestra meeting and finding their means of expression together. ...Lambert filters the power of his orchestrations and lets the improvisers find their own space to dwell. They do, making this wanderer an often times startling one."-Jerry D'Souza/AAJ-.95

LABEL: Justguitar Records
Poole, Rod / Bogdanowitsch, Sasha: Mind's Island - (Justguitar Records)
Rod Poole-guitar / Sasha Bogdanowitsch-voice "Spontaneous compositions in just intonations for guitar & voice"-from the back cover - "Los Angeles, California - Mind's Island features Rod Poole's just intoned acoustic guitar with the remarkable vocal talents of Sasha Bogdanowitsch whose wordless vocal and beautiful melodic sense work both with, and against, Poole's more grittier sounding harmonic washes and minimalist guitar playing. The use of "just intonation" or "pure tuning" was paramount to the success of this project. The magnitude of the overtones and resonance in abundance in this tuning allow the musicians to produce sounds simply not possible with instruments in the 12-tone idiom from the last few centuries. Both Poole and Bogdanowitsch are long-time practitioners of just intoned music and Mind's Island is an advanced example of the melodic and harmonic possibilities that can be created using alternative tuning systems. Ashley, Robert: Perfect Lives - (Lovely Music)
Robert Ashley-solo voice / Jill Kroesen and David Van Tieghem-chorus / "Blue" Gene Tyranny-keyboards / David Van Tieghem-non-keyboard percussion / Peter Gordon-music producer / Paul Shorr-soundtrack producer "Perfect Lives has been called "the most influential music/theater/literary work of the 1980s." At its center is the hypnotic voice of Robert Ashley. His continuous song narrates the events of the story and describes a 1980's update of the mythology of small town America. Perfect Lives is populated with myriad characters revolving around two musicians - "R", the singer of myth and legend, and his friend, Buddy, "The World's Greatest Piano Player". They have come to a small town in the Midwest to entertain at the Perfect Lives Lounge. As Robert Ashley describes in the opera synopsis, "they fall in with two locals to commit the perfect crime, a metaphor for something philosophical: in this case, to remove a sizable about of money from The Bank for one day (and one day only)
and let the whole world know that it was missing." The eloping couple, Ed and Gwyn, the old people at the home, the sheriff and his wife (Will and Ida) who finally unravel the mystery, and Isolde who watches the celebration of the changing of the light at sundown from the doorway of her mother's house are some of the characters who journey through the seven episodes of the opera. Derived from a colloquial idiom, Perfect Lives transforms familiar material into an elaborate metaphor for the rebirth of the human soul. It has been called a comic opera about reincarnation."-Lovely Music-.95

Adams, John Luther: Strange and Sacred Noise - (Mode Records)
Percussion Group Cincinnati "John Luther Adams is an Alaskan composer. For Adams, Alaska is not a catalog of ideas and sounds, instead, Alaska is a provocation. For all of its enormity, Alaska leans inward towards essential qualities and purified forces. In Adams' music we find this same sense of space and the same tendency inward towards the purified. His is an intimate and focused music that reverberates in a large space. Strange and Sacred Noise is a monumental work for percussion quartet in nine movements."-Mode-.45

"This CD brings together all of Xenakis' chamber music for strings for the first time (with the exception of the string quartets). The music spans almost 30 years. Many first recordings. The Mole Trilogy is a massive concept record from the mysterious Residents, released through the early 80's. "Mark of the Mole" is the story of two fictional races, the Moles and the Chubs. The pieces he wrote in this style often had intentionally provocative titles intended to reinterpret the minorities Eastman belonged to in a positive light: for example, Evil N
igger, Crazy Nigger, and Gay Guerrilla (all circa 1980). These three pieces, all scored for multiple pianos, build up immense emotive power through the incessant repetition of rhythmic figures."-New World-.95

The story of Eva/Yee-Wa, a young Chinese-American woman living with her mother, is the story of many diasporic peoples who have sought a better life in new, often harsh surroundings. The poetry of Filloux's libretto fuses perfectly with Hwang's eclectic score, beautifully capturing the complex, intimate relationships among these three characters. The opera employs both Chinese and Western instruments in an ensemble of eight players: piccolo/flute/alto flute; Bb clarinet/bass clarinet; vib
raphone; pipa (Chinese lute); accordion; percussion, including Tibetan chimes and singing bowls, whirling air tubes, Chinese tom toms, and a Buddhist fan drum; erhu/gaohu/zhonghu (a family of two-stringed Chinese violins categorized as huqin); and cello. In Hwang's skilled hands, these instruments together forge a rich amalgam of sound-in the composer's words, "complex suspensions rather than homogenous solutions.""-New World-.95

Both have a leather-bound folder full of underground back-story - Hasegawa was the lead singer of seminal early eighties Japanese punk/hardcore group Aburadako (Greasy Octopus), while Uchida was a long-term member of Haino's Nijiumu medieval dream-drone unit. The group's instrumentation is highly unorthodox, placing Uchida's mysterious bass textures against the wet skirl of Hasegawa's hichiriki, an ancient double-reed wind instrument whose haunting upper register tones are an unmistakable feature of gagaku court music. Fred Frith / Bill Laswell / Fred Maher The amazing downtown NY trio's first record was an amazing expedition of playing. "Fred Frith met Bill Laswell and Fred Maher (along with Michael Beinhorn) then known as the Zu Band, on the first day he arrived in New York in 1978. They were rehearsing his song Moeris Dancing in the basement of Giorgio Gomelsky's Zu Space. There was an instant rapport. Some time later, when Peter Blegvad was looking for an opening band for his Valentine's day concert at Soundscape, Frith invited Bill and Fred to join him in a power trio. The band was an instant success, and soon they were performing all over the city, in the Mudd Club, Danceteria, the Peppermint Lounge, Inroads, CBGB, Hurrah, and many others."-Recommended Records-.95

Skeleton Crew: Learn to Talk and Country of Blinds - (Recommended Records)
Fred Frith / Tom Cora / Zeena Parkins "A timely reissue of two timeless classics. On the first CD it's just Fred Frith and Tom Cora, the legendary two man crew who somehow þin real time, not with endless overdubs - managed to play all their own instruments (cello, bass, electric guitar, violin, casio) and sing - as well as, between them, constructing the drum parts þdislocated into elements with each of them having bits of the kit. This made for some fantastic - and normally unplayable parts - most drummers having only one brain. No one sounded like Skeleton Crew, ever. Devious, complicated, brutally simple, always unexpected, turning on a dime, this was not just a pop band but a tocsin, a call to arms - and in a short recorded life it produced a catalogue of invention that is still breathtaking today. On the second album, the inspired addition of Zeena Parkins (keyboards, accordion, more drums, more vocals) led to some of the best music of the decade. The recording was raw
er, more urgent, the songs standing out in sharp relief; every part essential. And yet - it's a puzzle almost impossible to unravel: how on earth did they ever evolve those dislocated parts and still make them fit so perfectly together? Did I mention the texts? So much to the point, so good. And where are the Skeleton Crews today when we really need them? Both CDs are here, in full, re-mastered by Fred and with 10 extra tracks þeach as good as anything on the official albums"-Recommended Records-.95

Paraphrase: Pre-Emptive Denial - (Screwgun)
Time Berne-saxophone / Drew Gress-bass / Tom Rainey-drums A May, 2005 show at John Zorn's The Stone club in New York is the source for Pre-Emptive Denial, an album of pure spontaneity that reveals how, even in a totally free context, the members of Paraphrase think compositionally. While the territory Paraphrase travels is diverse indeed, and its approach is not for the faint of heart, it does show that free music needn't lack purpose. It wouldn't work, of course, unless the musicians were in a constant state of readiness, with ears wide open and minds unencumbered. The two 25-minute pieces are remarkable in just how responsive each player is to his surroundings-at times subtle, elsewhere more direct. But Paraphrase's clear purpose is to build a collective something from nothing. Berne is capable of wilder flights, but is invariably found trying to develop thematically. The tiniest motif becomes a repeated and ever-evolving phrase that leads logically to the next. While ther
e's rarely a defined groove, neither does Rainey rely on his kit for solely textural purposes. "-John Kelman, AAJ-.95

Grubbs, David: Two Soundtracks for Angela Bulloch - (Semishigure)
"David Grubbs (Bastro, Gastr Del Sol) new mini-album features two compositions commissioned by Angela Bulloch for two of her installation pieces. The two pieces on this CD accompany the works 'Z Point' and 'Horizontal Technicolour,' two major works that make use of - or, rather, are connected to - Antonioni's Zabriskie Point. 'Z Point' is based on original film material of the famous desert explosion from the final scenes, whereas 'Horizontal Technicolour' uses material filmed by the artist herself at Death Valley, a setting similar to the one used in the final scenes from Antonioni's film. The two pieces by David Grubbs are beautiful and intricate works in which the original Antonioni soundtrack, the translations of the film in other languages, and his own sound palette come together. They show yet another different approach to his diverse musical capacities and are maybe closest in spirit to his Thirty-Minute Raven mini-album on Rectangle. The CD comes with a 12-page book
let with previously unpublished stills from the Death Valley desert taken by Angela Bulloch."-Bottrop-.95

Kubisch, Christina: Armonica - (Semishigure)
Christina Kubisch-glass harmonica "Completing the trilogy of Christina Kubisch releases on Semishigure, Armonica features another investigation into one specific sound source, which forms the basis of a one-hour composition. Kubisch's newest work is created by using the glass harmonica, an instrument from the 18th century, which isn't in use anymore. The glass harmonica, also known as armonica, was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1763. This instrument consisted of a series of chromatically graded glass discs, which were moved by foot action. The sounds were produced by friction against the glass rims through wet fingers. The instrument was very much in vogue in the 18th century due to its mysterious sound, often compared to voices from higher spheres. Playing the glass harmonica caused serious nervous breakdowns in some of its, mostly female, players, which soon caused it to go out of fashion. The composition 'Armonica' consists exclusively of original recordings made using
an authentic glass harmonica from the museum of musical instruments in Berlin, Germany. The recording has not been altered artificially, making the distinctive sound of this instrument the foundation on which the recording rests."-Semishigure-.95

Not your typical various
artist release, the CD is the result of 2003 and 2004 Resonance FM broadcasts of Sonic Art Network's concept: to ask a diverse set of artists to broadcast material that fit within the confines of Fitzgerald's manifesto. It's eccletic and elegant at the same time. When it's not being extremely weird. The aforementioned poster reprints the manifesto, which is quite complex and filled with archaic ideas of "decency" and competition. The booklet includes games, illustrates a set of cards for the artists, and provides historic information. Very nicely put together in a printed mailer, this is a recommended addition to any unusual collection of unlikely output from an excellent set of musicians.-.95

Blake, Ran: Indian Winter - (Soul Note)
Ran Blake-piano / David "Knife" Fabris-electric guitar "Like Alfred Hitchcock, the filmmaker he most admires, Ran Blake uses odd angles to shape the audience's view of his material. In Hitchcock the oddly framed scene can disorient viewers, causing discomfort though the subject is mundane. Blake does the same with the strains of the torch songs he favors. He darkens the harmonies, pushing them away from the tonality ever so slightly. He knows how to strip a melody to its emotional core. He swings, but with a certain diffidence. And though Blake would never be described as a virtuoso pianist, he employs a full palette of pianistic color. All this is on display on Indian Winter. Blake, along with guitarist David Fabris, recorded this during a European tour. Though they get equal billing, this is very much a Blake recording. Fabris appears on ten of the 23 tracks, the others spotlighting Blake's distinctive solo piano."-by David Dupont/One Final Note-.95
